Rotor Balancing & Influence Coefficient Analysis

This presentation was made at the Vibration Institute’s 2017 Annual Training Conference, and Mobius Institute’s 2017 International Vibration Analysis Conference in Belgium. It reviews rotordynamics from a balancing perspective, and how to utilize Influence Coefficients more effectively during rotor balancing.

Turbine-Generator Balancing – Balancing A Bowed Turbine Rotor

This Case History reviews the balancing of HP-IP Turbine rotor that had incurred a 0.015″ permanent bow after the unit’s turning-gear failed to engage after a hot shutdown.

Turbine-Generator Balancing – Identifying Modally Effective Solutions

This brief presentation reviews the essential considerations that must be taken into account for effective field balancing of turbo-machinery, including how to deal with rotor resonances (“criticals”). The use of the author’s “Balancing-T” is also reviewed for effective weight angle selection on flexible rotors, and static-couple derivation is reviewed as a complement to transient speed analysis.

Transient Vibration Analysis – Insights into Machinery Behavior

This presentation was made at the December meeting of the Vibration Institute’s Piedmont Chapter in Halifax, NC, during December 2007. It reviews the basic elements of transient speed vibration analysis, and how it can augment Predictive Maintenance / PdM analysis. Covered in the presentation are transient data plot types, slow roll compensation, resonance identification, amplification factor measurements, 1st and 2nd mode rotor balancing, shaft centerline movement, eccentricity ratio measurements, and more. Please contact the author for a copy of the full technical paper.

On-Line Monitoring Systems

This presentation discusses the various considerations in selecting and specifying a vibration monitoring system. Systems reviewed include continuous monitoring, polling / scanning, and transmitters.

Integrally Geared Centrifugal Air Compressor – Vibration Analysis Studies

This presentation discusses experience collecting and analyzing vibration analysis data on several different models and types of high speed air compressors.

Balancing a Generator at a Hydro Electric Plant
by Gary W. Peterson, PPL Montana, LLC

This article was prepared by on one of our clients and shows how vibration in a vertical hydro-turbine is affected by the changes in dynamic shaft support stiffness that result from changes in bearing clearance, and highlights the need to do root-cause analysis before balancing these types of machines.
